Sovereign Citizens vs. Officers

Deputy Shawn Searels with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia pulls over a vehicle for going 17 mph over the speed limit on a Coweta County highway. The driver starts spouting off sovereign citizen rhetoric when Searels asks to search her car. Then, Officer Brandon Gossert with the Fontana Police Department encounters another sovereign citizen with no valid tags on his vehicle. Officers then find a book titled “How To Free Yourself From Legal Tyranny” in the man’s possession. The suspect proceeds to try to school officers on why he doesn’t have to follow the law. Finally, Volusia County deputies face off with two suspects claiming to be sovereign citizens who are just “traveling.”
