Tommie Johnson III is the current Oklahoma County Sheriff in Oklahoma. He was first elected in 2020, making history as the first Black sheriff of Oklahoma County, and was recently re-elected in November 2024 for a term that will end on January 2, 2029. Johnson is an Oklahoma City native and decorated law enforcement professional. He attended Oklahoma City Public Schools throughout his education, graduating from U.S. Grant High School.
Before becoming sheriff, Johnson worked at the University of Oklahoma and later the Norman Police Department where he earned a lifesaving award. During his first term as sheriff, Johnson implemented several changes including restructuring the organizational chart to put more deputies on the streets, implementing body-worn cameras, replacing outdated body armor through donations, and upgrading the patrol vehicle fleet. Johnson has focused on mental health solutions by hiring a mental health liaison to connect individuals in crisis with services and adding a licensed counselor to assist in mental health emergencies.
