The Wheeling Police Department serves the city of Wheeling, West Virginia, as the primary law enforcement agency. Wheeling is a historic city located in Ohio and Marshall counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The county seat of Ohio County, it lies along the Ohio River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains within the state’s northern panhandle. The city has a rich heritage as both the birthplace of West Virginia and the First State Capitol.
The Wheeling Police Department has numerous specialized units including:
Patrol Division, Crash Reconstruction Unit, Crisis Negotiations Team, Drug Task Force, Highway Safety Office, Investigations, K9 Unit, Marine Patrol & Dive Team, Mountain Bike Unit, Office of Professional Standards, School Resource Officers, Police Training, SWAT, and Victim Advocacy Program.
Shawn Schwertfeger has served as the City of Wheeling, West Virginia’s Chief of Police since June of 2012. Chief Schwertfeger graduated from John Marshall High School in 1984 and West Liberty University, where earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice/Business Administration in 1989. Before joining Wheeling PD, he served as a Captain in the Albemarle County, Virginia Police Department, retiring in 2012 after 21-years of service. He is a graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School at the University of Richmond, and a 2009 graduate of the FBI National Academy.
