The county’s two seats, Stuttgart and Dewitt, have unique origins. Stuttgart was founded in 1878 by a German Lutheran congregation. Dewitt, established in 1853, was chosen as the county seat due to its central location. Its name was selected randomly from a list of submissions, honoring Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York.
Agriculture is a cornerstone of Arkansas County’s economy. Rice and soybeans are the primary crops, with over 280,000 acres dedicated to their cultivation annually. Wheat, oats, milo, and corn are also grown locally. Fishing and cattle industries provide additional economic support. Arkansas County is steeped in history and natural beauty.
